We leave Barisal while the stars are still out — and just as the sky begins to pale, we reach the edge of Satla bil, step into a wooden boat, and push off into the half-light.
Then the sun comes up, and the water catches fire.
Red water lilies — thousands upon thousands — blooming to the horizon in every direction, opening with the light. On most mornings you'll share one of Bangladesh's great natural spectacles with nobody but the flower pickers gliding between the blooms. Drift through it. Pick a lily by hand. Watch the bil wake up — the flowers close as the sun climbs, so this hour belongs only to those who came for it.
From the bil, we follow the water to the floating markets of Harta — vegetables, fruit and rice moving boat-to-boat, deals made across gunwales, the same way this delta has traded for generations. No performance. Just commerce that happens to float.
Then lunch in a village home by the wetlands, cooked fresh from the morning's water and fields — and the slow ride home becomes the reward: Guthia Mosque, white and grand amid its gardens, and Durga Sagar, the vast dighi dug for a queen two and a half centuries ago, where you'll sit under old trees by still water and feel the day settle. Back in Barisal by late afternoon, the whole evening to rest.
