This is not a checklist day. No racing between landmarks, no counting monuments. This is Barisal the way it's actually lived — at walking pace, with tea breaks.
We wander the old town first: zamindar mansions from a century ago, their grand gates quietly swallowed by banyan roots — each one holding a family story of fortune, feuds and fading glory. Mondirs where the bells still ring the hours. Oxford Mission Church, one of the largest churches in this part of Asia, standing in red brick where almost no traveler ever looks for it. Between the stories, lunch where the river people eat — fresh from the day's catch, by the ghat.
Then, while there's still daylight, we walk down to 30 Godown and step onto a boat.
The city slides away behind us. We pass under Dobdobia bridge, and the water begins to widen — and widen — until suddenly you're floating at a place where three rivers meet and become one. Water to every horizon. This is where we stop for tea.
And while you drink it, I'll tell you about the Barisal Guns — one of the oldest unsolved mysteries on Earth. For nearly a century, mysterious cannon-booms rolled across this delta. British officers logged them in the 1870s. The Asiatic Society sent out investigators. The journal Nature — yes, that Nature — published on it in London in 1896. The world's best scientific minds tried and failed to explain the sounds. Then, in the 1950s, they simply stopped. Nobody knows why they began. Nobody knows why they ended. Don't take my word for it — look it up tonight from your hotel. You'll have heard the story first on the water where it happened.
Then we turn back, and the river rewards us: the light turns gold, the launches switch on their lamps, and the Kirtonkhola hums with evening life all the way home to 30 Godown. In 1985, a band called Chime sang a song to this river that a whole generation of Bengalis still knows by heart. Out here, you'll understand why someone would write a river a love letter.
